Volunteer work to help the Group | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
There are several ways in which members can help the Group, for instance, by publicising our activities.
Your help with Sunday or Wednesday rambles, acting as a walks leader, would be much appreciated (You need to be a member of the Ramblers' Association to be covered by our insurance when leading). If you offer to lead, you will need to adapt your walking pace to one your group would find comfortable. Walks leaders also have to familiarise themselves with the route by doing a reconnaissance walk.
Usually the (A- and B- and sometimes C-) Sunday walks leaders reconnoitre together, with the more experienced leader helping newcomers to leading.
Planning walksYou may enjoy planning walks, whether for the Group, or the general public. ![]() Tuition in map-reading and leadership is being organised for interested members to assist them in this task. ![]() Footpath work Another activity for which your help would be very welcome, is 'foot-path work'. This term includes both the physical work of repairing and /or marking paths, but also research into the status of footpaths within the Birmingham authority. Physical footpath work is an organised activity, and takes place under auspices of the local authority (accident cover is provided). As you can see, Group members have many opportunities to make use of their skills. Incidentally, many of these activities serve to promote the charitable objectives of the Ramblers' Association at the same time, for example, while helping to earn the Group a place in history building bridges or clearing footpaths!

| Participating in an RA project Some of the Group's members have become volunteers, jointly with members of other Birmingham walking groups, for a project under development of the RA, 'Get walking . . . Keep walking'. This implies developing and/or checking short urban routes for people unused to taking long walks. Here are some photos taken at the traing day for the project. | ![]() |
