Walk Day Out - Buxton & Poole's Cavern.

On Saturday 24th September the group Walk Day Out will be visiting the delightful spa town of Buxton in the Peak District. A look round the town will include the Pavilion Gardens, plus a country walk of three miles. After lunch in Buxton there will be the option of visiting Poole's Cavern to see the stalactite and stalagmite formations, or a walk through woodland to visit Solomon's Temple, with its panoramic views of Buxton. The day out costs £19 or £12.50, depending on which option you take, and includes coach travel, entrance fee, and the services of a tour manager. A booking form is attached to this webpage for you to download and print, and contains full details. Click on this link: Buxton.pdf.
The WALK DAY OUT comprises a short morning walk of usually three to four miles, a pub lunch and an afternoon visit to a place of interest. The concept was born as a result of two elements not included in our mainstream walking programme.
  • Firstly to provide a walk shorter than our basic programme
  • of 10 to 12 mile Sunday rambles or the 8 mile WEEKDAY WALK.

  • Secondly, on these walks, we often by-pass an 'attraction'
  • which members would have been interested in visiting but obviously time would not permit in the days walking schedule.
Examples of WALK DAYS OUT include visits to Blists Hill Victorian Town, Jodrell Bank, Rugeley Power Station, Snibston Discovery Park, Crich Tramway Museum, guided walks round Shrewsbury and Gloucester and a visit to Sherwood Forest and the haunts of Robin Hood

The 2011 Annual Walk Day Out

Earlier this year we went to Leamington Spa by coach and then walked some three miles along the river and canal to Warwick. Some of us went on to visit Warwick Castle, others enjoyed a guided tour of Lord Leicester Hospital, - 'a charitable institution for the housing and maintenance of the needy, infirm or aged'.
The 2010 Annual Day Out, undoubtedly a prime social activity, took us on the 3rd of July to Salisbury and Stonehenge. Derek and Ceri had organised the nicest of weathers for this jaunt.
In Salisbury we were issued clear walk-round city guides as well as streetplans.
Ceri took people first to Salisbusy Cathedral, while Derek's party began by getting an overview of Salisbury's memorable, historic buildings. By 3 o'clock we were all ready for the second visit of the day, to Stonehenge. Seeing the four thousand year old stones on Salisbury plain in the bright sunlight on a breezy day, would be the highlights of the day, if Salisbury itself weren't competing for the honour.

WALK DAY's OUT are organised by Derek Garfield and Ceri Dittrich, who are always open to suggestions. Derek and Ceri can be contacted on the members contacts page of this website, or you can telephone Derek on 0121 783 5418. We tend to use a coach but also use public transport where feasible. So, we will be pleased to hear from you.
