Some of the most recent social activities

The 2010 Annual Day Out, undoubtedly a prime social activity, took us on the 3rd of July to Salisbury and Stonehenge. Derek and Ceri had organised the nicest of weathers for this jaunt.
In Salisbury we were issued clear walk-round city guides as well as streetplans.
Ceri took people first to Salisbusy Cathedral, while Derek's party began by getting an overview of Salisbury's memorable, historic buildings. By 3 o'clock we were all ready for the second visit of the day, to Stonehenge. Seeing the four thousand year old stones on Salisbury plain in the bright sunlight on a breezy day, would be the highlights of the day, if Salisbury itself weren't competing for the honour.

Walking itself is, of course, a very social activity. Perhaps we should spend more time looking at the scenery and wildlife and less time chatting but it is possible to do both if you are very clever.
Anyway, we in the Birmingham Group think that some specific 'social events' extend peoples enjoyment of being in the Group and are always well supported. We have skittles Evenings, Quiz Evenings, various Presentations, Backstage Theatre visits, Aston Hall by Candlelight, Imax Theatre visits, etc, etc. . . all designed to make membership of our Group more attractive and fun. Each year we have an Annual Day Out when we simply become tourists and visit perhaps a notable city. Last year we went to see the Trooping of the Colour in London, the year before Cambridge. And this year - well, just look at the first paragraph!

On 25th of September we hosted the Birmingham Astronomical Society, who presentation about the wonders of the night sky and different types of telescopes.
Telescopes could not be set up outside, as the sky was overcast,
they had plenty of stunning material to demonstrate inside.
Once the demonstrations are finished, we once again could indulge our tastebuds in one of the Group's celebrated cheese and wine buffets. It was a very interesting and successful evening

Needless to say, at Christmas, we have several special celebrations. We have weekends away, Bank Holidays away and every other year, a week's holiday abroad - more details about these activities elsewhere on this site.

But, of course, you do not have to join in any of these social events … you can simply come walking with us
